The soviets used the ''common enemy" ploy to its utmost. Without us to blame for all their failures, Russians would have been asking a lot sooner, why they didn't have hot water, toilet paper, decent wages, bedrooms for less than four people? But in sacrificing for Mother Russia against the capitalist pigs enabled them to avoid facing the failure of their system for most of their history and all of it since WWII. Finally when we disengaged and quit being suckered into brush fires and saber rattling throughout the world and just buried them under disparity of economic well-being, the Soviet finally lost the support of her people. At that time she was doomed. Some comparison may have helped, but you must remember the soviet citizen didn't have a clue about how we lived, all his news was managed, much like ours is beginning to be. Mostly, dissatisfaction with constant sacrifice wore them down. Without us as a common enemy their resolve would not have been so long-lived. It would have fallen sooner without the US to compare to.
