Sadly, any population center over about 100,000 is a de facto gun-free zone where this type of operation would go largely unhindered at the beginning. Of course, it will also have the effect of spurring more people to be armed and ready to grant a martyr's wish.

After a bit, I would expect any place that kept a "no weapons" sign on their door would probably go bankrupt, too.

"countless small operations that render daily life unbearable" - Ha! No wonder they idolize the 16th century. Doesn't he have a car and job? We ALREADY do that, Meetings at Work, going to the DMV, undergoing HR sensitivity training, insipid TV commercials, people on cellphones commuting - the list is endless and it doesn't break us. Sheesh!
