From what I've heard, the barrels on S&W 22A and 22S pistols are rifled on the same machinery used to cut the rifling on the vastly more expensive Model 41. The 22A/22S seem to be very popular among novice bullseye shooters who are dipping their toes in the game before they spend their money on a 41 or a Marvel 1911 rimfire upper.

As a plinker, though, they have a serious weakness vis a vis their Ruger/Browning competitors in that they puke their guts in relatively short order.

Hi Tam,

Thanks for the info! Makes me feel much better to find out that it's a known issue :-)

VegasChris,

The cracked frame thing is endemic to the gun. This recall is to fix slamfires.

OTOH, 22A's are really accurate until they crack their frames, and when they do, S&W will replace the cracked frame and number the new one to match the old so you don't have to do a new 4473...

They're not kidding about the recall, bad things can happen: http://s614.photobucket.com/albums/tt228/VegasChris/Kaboom/

On its way back to S&W now, hopefully they'll fix it :-0

From S&W: if you have a Model 22A, .22 LR pistol there exists the possibility that the slide was not manufactured to the correct tolerances...

...and a 100% chance that your gun is a ruptured pulsating ball of fuck.
