Versa Carry

I saw this link yesterday at Say Uncle, which goes to a review of the Versa Carry system by my buddy Richard Mann.  A while back, the Versa Carry guys had emailed me asking me if I wanted to review their system, I demurred after checking out their site.

Pictured on the right is the totality of the Versa Carry “system”.  Once I stopped giggling over the unfortunate appearance, the first thing I noticed is that it doesn’t cover the trigger of any handgun.  Which for me automatically makes it a no-fly zone.  Now, according to Romeo Tango Bravo, the Versa Carry will soon be offered in a Gen2 format that will have a guard that covers the trigger.

As a deep concealment option, I don’t see how this offers any advantages over a well made tuckable IWB holster though.  I use a Comp-Tac CTAC on a regular basis with a compact 9mm, and my carry gun can be easily concealed under an un-tucked t-shirt.  Plus, I can carry with a round in the chamber and actually re-holster without sticking my fingers in front of the muzzle.  For me the Versa Carry really fails because of the inability to re-holster without removing the clip from your belt and sticking the whole contraption back on the gun.

I do wish the Versa Carry guys the best of luck with their new product.  For only $20, I hope they sell a bunch of them to people, because I love capitalism.  I’ll just say that it’s definitely not the product for me, nor would I be comfortable recommending one to a friend or someone looking for a good carry holster.

I think it’s an interesting idea, but not all new ideas are good ideas. I likes me my Crossbreed and Galco tuckables, and I can’t see the Versa being any more comfortable (and more importantly) safe than what I have already.

Nope. Personally for a tuckable I want a layer of material between me and the gun.

I guess the Versa gets points for being versatile though.

I realize he’s your buddy, but that’s an utter piece of shit that’ll get your thigh perforated or worse. I’d name it the Versectomy carry system.

Basically a neglegent discharge would also be a Squib like explosion as the holster either ripps your side apart and or gun explodes. I’d want neither.

What’s so different about this and and “plastic” holsterl. If pistol mfg’s would start putting “safetyies” back on their guns it wouldn’t be a problem, I was a police officer for 11 years and carried off duty pistols (even a 1911) in my waist band. I never had a ND. This seems to be a new problem. If your safety minded and treat the weapon correctly (and don’t “play” with it or “figit” with it) you shouldn’t have a problem. It’s the “coyboys” out there where most of the problems come from.

A proper holster, whether it’s made of kydex or leather will do at least one thing that the Versa Carry doesn’t – cover the trigger guard of the pistol.

I wouldn’t carry a Glock in it, but a Kel Tec or a LCP or any DAO pistol wouldn;t bother me. I go back to the principel that ALL non DAO autos need a manual safety.

So you’d rather carry a gun with an inferior trigger pull in a dangerous holster than one of the best guns ever made in a safe holster?

I own a Glock mod 36 but it has a trigger safety installed. I wouldn’t carry it stock in any holster. At least the XD’s have a grip safety. I’m going to get a Beretta storm. I’ll carry that any way !

I wouldn’t use it for a C&L 1911, Glock, or M&P (something like an XD would seem to work)….but it seems like it has a place. It seems like a good IWB alternative for someone who has to pack more than one holster for a trip….esp. for someone who usually carries OWB or shoulder carry & might need the IWB option.

I wonder if they make one for snub revolvers….
